Start with everyday work
Before creating the first Intune policy, establish how people actually use their devices. An individually assigned laptop, a shared workstation and a personal smartphone have different requirements. Record the platform, owner, user group and important applications. Add the support contact and the disruption the business team can tolerate. This small inventory helps avoid a technically successful configuration that does not fit the way people need to work.
Describe the target for each device class
Define the intended state of each device class: how it is enrolled, which applications it needs and who may administer it. Include the handling of lost, replaced and retired devices. The blueprint is a working document of decisions and open issues. It should be clear enough that the endpoint team, service desk and project lead can describe the same process without first inspecting individual configuration settings.
Plan enrolment and transition together
Microsoft provides different enrolment approaches for different platforms and usage scenarios. The appropriate choice depends on factors such as ownership and existing management. Establish early whether devices can continue in use, need to be enrolled again or require a new setup. The transition plan should cover user data, required applications and communication. Existing devices are a separate test case; successful provisioning of a brand-new test device does not replace that assessment.
Translate requirements into understandable building blocks
Assign clear ownership for configuration, compliance, applications and updates. Describe the purpose and target group of each baseline before adding exceptions. A simple mapping of requirement, setting and verification step is useful during implementation. It preserves the reason behind each measure. Where multiple teams address the same requirement, resolve ownership early instead of discovering incompatible expectations during rollout.
Pilot a complete workplace
A pilot does not finish when enrolment succeeds. Check sign-in, application setup, updates and a typical support scenario against the agreed device classes. Ask staff to perform their essential tasks and record deviations. Give each reproducible problem an owner and a next action. Bring in the next group only after the agreed workflows function as intended. This helps reduce unplanned manual work during wider deployment.
Hand over the blueprint for operations
The handover should include the device-class model, policy assignments, known exceptions and change responsibilities. Agree on how new applications and devices enter the process and when the standard will be reviewed. Our 80-device migration case illustrates a specific transition; it is not a timing promise for other projects. Intune consulting addresses individual environments. M365 Secure Workplace combines device management with a standardised Microsoft 365 environment where its prerequisites fit.
